Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is one of the economic immigration programs managed through the Express Entry system in Canada. It is designed for individuals with skilled trade work experience who want to become permanent residents of Canada.
Express Entry Profile:
- Like other Express Entry programs, individuals interested in the Federal Skilled Trades Program must first create an online Express Entry profile.
- They must meet the minimum eligibility criteria for the program, including having at least two years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work) in a skilled trade within the five years before applying.
Eligible Skilled Trades:
- The Federal Skilled Trades Program includes a list of eligible skilled trades. These trades are organized under major and minor groups of the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system.
Language Proficiency:
- Candidates must meet the minimum language proficiency requirements in either English or French. This is usually demonstrated through language tests like the IELTS for English or TEF for French.
Job Offer or Certificate of Qualification:
- To be eligible for the Federal Skilled Trades Program, candidates must either have a valid job offer of at least one year from a Canadian employer or a certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.
Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Points:
- Candidates in the Express Entry pool are assigned a CRS score based on factors such as age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability.
- The highest-ranking candidates, including those with a valid job offer or certificate of qualification in a skilled trade, are invited to apply for permanent residence through regular Express Entry draws.
Invitation to Apply (ITA):
- Once invited, candidates have a limited time (usually 60 days) to submit a complete application for permanent residence.
Application Process:
- Successful candidates must submit a complete application along with supporting documents, including proof of work experience, language proficiency results, and other required documentation.
Permanent Residence:
- If the application is approved, candidates and their accompanying family members become permanent residents of Canada.
